Venus Williams’ US Open style is a love letter to American fashion

Venus Williams lost her first-round singles match at the 2025 US Open, but her court game was full of aces. On Monday night, under the floodlights at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Williams donned a custom-made ERL outfit, adding a new Americana twist to her matchday repertoire. Williams, eliminated after a close match against Karolina Muchova, opted for the Venice Beach brand for a functional and vibrant look. In addition to her usual bright red Wilson bag, Williams carried a buttery yellow shearling racket case, a nod to ERL’s viral fur bags. For her main outfit, the champion wore a collared dress with a pleated skirt, paired with a matching visor and overshirt. While tennis white is typically reserved for Wimbledon, the color choice was intentional by Williams and her stylist, Ronald Burton III.

Williams’s dress appeared to be a nod to the late, trailblazing tennis player Althea Gibson, the first Black woman to compete in a major tournament. The US Open is honoring Gibson this year, marking 75 years since her first appearance at the event.

Before her singles match, Williams participated in an exhibition event where she collaborated with one of New York’s most avant-garde brands: Luar. She wore a tailored black dress and eyelet track jacket, inspired by the brand’s Spring 2025 runway. And for the mixed doubles tournament, a few days earlier, Williams competed in a navy cutout outfit by Khaite, the cult luxury brand favored by celebrities like Katie Holmes and Jennifer Lawrence.

“For me, it was simply about showing the power of evolution and the ability to adapt as a seasoned veteran and focusing on the future of American fashion that will become legendary houses in their own right,” Burton told WWD of the inspiration behind Williams’ ensembles.

According to the New York Times, Williams also commissioned looks from two well-known American brands: Who Decides War and Phillip Lim. We might see one of these creations in action on Thursday, when she returns to the court for the doubles alongside Canadian Leylah Fernandez.
