Selena Gomez’s ‘Sunset Blvd’ Glamour Is Inspired by a Cult ’80s Movie

Selena Gomez draws inspiration from these cult classics. In the new music video for her song “Sunset Blvd,” the singer and actress embraces the look of an ’80s queen, with hair and makeup inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s 1982 film, One From the Heart.

The vintage-inspired video, directed by Petra Collins, begins with Gomez daydreaming about her fiancé Benny Blanco. Gomez alternates between several looks—black Victoria’s Secret lingerie, cherry red, and a white shirt—but maintains a singular beauty throughout. She opted for bright red lipstick and sported Hollywood curls. A classic red manicure completed the look. Like a true Hollywood starlet, she draped herself in a wealth of diamond jewelry.

A specific moment where Gomez sings adoringly to a miniature Blanco seems to directly reference a famous scene from One from the Heart. In the musical, Leila (a runaway circus performer played by German actress and model Nastassja Kinski) sings “Little Boy Blue” to Hank, played by Frederic Forrest. Gomez took some artistic liberties toward the end of the music video, when she literally bites Blanco.

“Our first date was on Sunset Blvd, and that’s also the title of our next song together,” Gomez said earlier this week about the song’s special meaning. It’s the final track from their joint album with Blanco, I Said I Love You First. They previously released “Scared of Loving You” and “Call Me When You Break Up” with Gracie Abrams.

This isn’t the first time the couple has collaborated. Blanco and Gomez, who got engaged in December 2024, previously collaborated on Gomez’s songs “Kill Em With Kindness” and “Single Soon” in 2015 and 2023, respectively.

“It was a taste of who we are, how we created this project together, the love we have for it, and the love we have for each other,” Gomez said of the album’s lead single, “Scared of Loving You.” She added that the track “just felt meant to be.”
