Hermès is often associated with the phrase “understated luxury,” even though the French house’s signature bags—the Birkin and the Kelly—are anything but understated. Perhaps that’s why Jennifer Lawrence, queen of understated wealth, carried an understated Hermès handbag in New York yesterday, “if you know, you know.”
Instead of the easily identifiable Birkin or Kelly, Lawrence opted for the Plume d’Hermès bag, made of vibrant red leather with silver hardware. Like all Hermès models, the Plume is understated and features an east-meets-west silhouette, with clean, simple handles. Its design is inspired by the brand’s luggage line, launched in the 1960s. Compared to more popular Hermès handbags, which can fetch tens of thousands of dollars, Lawrence’s Plume sells for as little as $3,000 on secondhand markets.
This bag shares many similarities with The Row’s E/W top-handle bag (mainly its saddle-shaped handles and horizontal shape), which may explain Lawrence’s choice. A longtime fan of the brand founded by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, she even paired her bag with a pair of black “Lucca” loafers. A wool coat, blue jeans and tinted glasses completed Lawrence’s outfit.

Lawrence has always been at the forefront of handbag trends. The actress often opts for lesser-known (but soon-to-be-on-trend) designs from cult brands. Last month, she paired a bold leopard coat with The Row’s N/S tote bag. Sure, The Row’s Margaux (and now Marlo) bags are a celebrity favorite right now—Kendall Jenner wore the latter a few days ago in Paris—but Lawrence clearly isn’t taking her cues from trends. She’s ahead of her time.
