All eyes will be on Marty Supreme this awards season. And not just because it’s Timothée Chalamet’s next film. A24’s dramedy marks the solo directorial debut of Josh Safdie (who previously helmed films like Uncut Gems and Good Time with his brother Benny). To top it all off, it also brought Gwyneth Paltrow to the big screen for her first non-Marvel role in over a decade. With it set for Christmas, there’s still plenty of time until its release, but here’s everything we know so far.

Is there a trailer for Marty Supreme?

The first trailer, released on August 13, opens with Chalamet as a boxer on the phone with Paltrow’s character, apparently a bona fide movie star. He boasts that he’s on the front page of a newspaper thanks, among other things, to his promising ping-pong career. The trailer then descends into chaos, with glimpses of the roles played by Kevin O’Leary, Fran Drescher, and Odessa A’zion.

What is the plot of Marty Supreme?

Marty Supreme is loosely based on American ping-pong legend Martin “Marty” Reisman, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Starring on the Lower East Side—coincidentally, where Chalamet grew up—Reisman became the U.S. Men’s Singles Champion in 1958 and 1960, and later convinced celebrities to participate in boxing matches. Apparently, he was quite a character.

However, the film is billed as a “fictional original film” and not a biopic. “Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in search of greatness,” the official description reads, suggesting that the film will take artistic liberties with Reisman’s biography.

What attracted Paltrow to her return?
Paltrow is returning to film for the first time since Avengers: Endgame (2019). The news, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, came as a major surprise, given that the Oscar winner has taken a step back from acting to focus on her lifestyle brand, Goop, launched in 2008. “I’m happy with what I’m doing at Goop, but I never say never,” Paltrow said last year about a possible return to film. “If I’m not busy running Goop, and if one of my best friends tells me to come do this with us, I might consider it.”

Chalamet may not be Paltrow’s best friend, but his fame is steadily growing in Hollywood, which might explain why she agreed to participate in the project. There are also rumors that Paltrow’s daughter, Apple Martin, convinced her to take the role because she had a crush on Chalamet “for years.”

Chalamet and Paltrow will be joined by Tyler, the Creator (making his film debut) and Fran Drescher in Marty Supreme. Drescher’s addition to the cast was announced for October 4, 2024. She will play Chalamet’s character’s mother. Chalamet will be the film’s main character, while Paltrow will play a movie star who begins a romantic relationship with Marty. “She’s had a pretty rough life, and I think he’s bringing her back to life, but it’s kind of a trade-off for both of them,” Paltrow said of her character.

Odessa A’zion, director Abel Ferrara, Shark Tank actor and investor Kevin O’Leary, and magician Penn Jillette are also in the cast. Sandra Bernhard will make a cameo appearance as Drescher’s neighbor and friend.

Josh Safdie will direct the film from an original screenplay co-written with Ronald Bronstein. This is his first solo film since his professional split with his brother Benny Safdie. Marty Supreme will be produced by Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Bronstein, Safdie, Chalamet and A24.

When was Marty Supreme filmed?

On October 16, 2024, Paltrow was first photographed on the set of Marty Supreme. The actress resembled Swan, wearing a dramatic red gown and diamond earrings. She and Chalamet shared a kiss. In a March 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, Paltrow discussed her relationship with Chalamet in the film, saying, “There’s a lot of sex in this movie… There’s a lot, a lot of it.”

Paltrow also expressed surprise at having an intimacy coordinator on set—a professional who works with actors and directors to create safe, intimate scenes. She said, “I thought, ‘Darling, I’m from the era where we get naked, we get in bed, the camera’s on.'”

The duo ultimately decided not to use an intimacy coordinator during their scenes. “We thought, ‘We think this is okay. We can take a step back. I don’t know how it feels for young people starting out, but… if we say, ‘Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here,’ as a performer, I would feel very awkward.”
