BACKGROUND GRID
Aimee Lou Wood has one more episode of “The White Lotus” in Thailand to go, but in real life, her style has definitely evolved into something more cosmopolitan. She stepped out in New York City today with a look that was more like The Matrix meets Gossip Girl.
Skipping the underwear-exposed trend, Wood opted for exposed white socks. She opted to pair her suede ballet flats with ruched mid-calf socks. For an extra transitional layering touch, the actress slipped on sheer black tights underneath her socks. The socks-and-ballet trick really made Wood’s two-tone look stand out, especially since she appeared to be pantsless. The actress topped it off with a Matrix-esque trench coat, a white turtleneck, and a structured Manu Atelier handbag.

BACKGROUND GRID
This outfit not only blends genres, it also seamlessly blends seasons. The socks-flats combo is ideal when an outfit calls for summer shoes, but the outside temperature doesn’t necessarily allow for full skin exposure.
Wood had doubled down on her look earlier in the day for an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. Instead of cute ballet flats, she opted for a more casual outfit with heeled loafers. Her wide-leg jeans were just long enough to reveal her white socks. The actress had again opted for a white handbag, this time the Tory Burch “Romy” tote.

BACKGROUND GRID
Wearing white socks and black shoes isn’t anything new. This essentially summery look has been around for a while and is a popular fashion trick on the runways and in celebrity wardrobes. Hailey Bieber regularly wears her ballet flats with white socks, as do Amelia Gray Hamlin and Kendall Jenner. Some, like Sydney Sweeney, take it a step further by wearing exposed socks and high heels. But pairing white socks with black loafers and showing them off like Wood did here has long been a sartorial taboo. (Especially among men, where socks are expected to perfectly match the color of the shoes.) But like a true It girl, Wood imposes her own sartorial rules.
