Doechii is a trendsetter in her own right, but her latest stage look is straight out of the Parisian runways of the early 2000s. Last week at the Osheaga Music Festival in Montreal, Canada, the Grammy Award winner donned a surprisingly on-trend outfit from Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2003 collection.
Doechii’s JPG outfit, worn by none other than Alek Wek at the time, consists of an oversized rugby top tucked into a ruffled ballerina skirt. Her loose-fitting marsh green shirt with brown stripes along the sleeves is a nod to the recent wave of country club polos, notably worn by Rihanna. Doechii’s tulle skirt brought a feminine touch to the outfit, but it was updated with military-style boots. These knee-high boots are lace-up and open at the sides.
In true Doechii fashion, she made her own modifications to her look. She enhanced the original outfits—a red headband and a silver necklace—with gold armbands and a long braided hairstyle.

Vintage is nothing new for Doechii: She wore a sheer Donna Karan gown from 2014 to a Billboard event earlier this year. And at Glastonbury this year, she donned a custom Vivienne Westwood dress inspired by an outfit worn by Kate Moss in her landmark spring 1994 “Café Society” collection. Finding archival pieces to wear on stage is no easy feat. But Doechii has established herself as one of the most fashionable fashionistas around, a quality confirmed by her festival appearances this summer.

After performing in Montreal with JPG, Doechii headed to the U.S. for Lollapalooza in Chicago last weekend, where she revealed her schoolgirl side. She wore a trio of custom DSquared2 outfits, including an ultra-short blazer, cutoff micro shorts that she folded over à la Tyla, and a semi-sheer bra top trimmed with lace. At a concert in Denmark in July, she donned another preppy ensemble, this one by Thom Browne. At each show, her dancers wore outfits from both designers for perfect coordination. On her latest album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, Doechii raps, “I’m so ahead of this trend.” She wasn’t kidding.
