Rihanna’s daring skirt is a party in the front and back

We’re currently seeing a veritable wave of celebrities sporting backless dresses and bare butts, but Rihanna has managed to revisit the trend with a twist. This weekend in Los Angeles, the beauty mogul paired a minimalist skirt with an unexpected ski coat and a mountain of diamonds.

Rihanna dressed in dark navy to support her partner A$AP Rocky at the Rolling Loud festival. She kicked off her look with a Balenciaga parka featuring a sculptural collar and extravagant sleeves. Instead of an equally voluminous bottom, the star opted for a daring maxi lace skirt by Jawara Alleyne, which was as festive on the front as it was on the back. A slit on one side of the skirt, reaching all the way to the waist, showcased Rihanna’s black sandals. The reverse side was just as daring, with two smaller slits and a completely sheer panel revealing Rihanna’s black thong. Diamond jewelry by Marli New York completed her look.

Like Rihanna, other stars have taken a very specific approach to backless outfits. Take Zoë Kravitz for the Vanity Fair Oscars party. The Blink Twice director wore a vintage Saint Laurent gown, featuring a discreet, feminine neckline and a sheer cutout at the buttocks. Ruth Negga took a similar approach at the One on the Call Sheet premiere a few days later. She wore a Prada backless skirt, paired with a simple crew-neck top.

Of course, the see-through, butt-baring look isn’t new to Rihanna. She notably wore a Swarovski-embellished Adam Selman gown to the 2014 CFDA Awards, which was completely sheer. And for her latest look, she embraced the trend with an editorial styling trick few have dared to do: wearing her fullest, puffiest coat with her most daring, sheer dance skirt.
